Getting started
Which file do I download?
Windows: GestureWright-Setup-….exe. Mac with an Apple chip: the apple-silicon disk image. Intel Mac: the intel disk image. To check your Mac, open Apple menu › About This Mac: “Chip” means Apple, “Processor” means Intel.
Windows says “Windows protected your PC”.
This version isn't signed with a Microsoft certificate yet, so SmartScreen warns about it once. Choose More info, then Run anyway.
My Mac says the app can't be opened.
In Applications, right-click GestureWright and choose Open, then Open again. If macOS still refuses, run xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/GestureWright.app in Terminal.
Do I need to install Python or anything else?
No. The installer includes everything, including the hand-tracking model. You only need a camera.
Permissions
The pointer doesn't move on my Mac.
GestureWright needs Accessibility permission to move the pointer. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility and switch on GestureWright. If it's already on, switch it off and on again (macOS sometimes forgets after an update), then open GestureWright once more.
Nothing happens on Windows.
Check Settings › Privacy & security › Camera, and make sure Let desktop apps access your camera is on. Then open Start menu › GestureWright › GestureWright.
Another app is using the camera.
Most cameras can only be used by one app at a time. While a video call holds the camera, GestureWright waits and tries again every few seconds, and carries on by itself when the call ends.
Using gestures
It clicks things by accident.
Hold a fist for 1.5 seconds to pause before talking with your hands, and again to resume. If pinches still trigger too easily, lower pinch_on in the settings, for example to 0.22.
The pointer is jittery or slow.
Make sure your hand is well lit. In the settings, lower smoothing.min_cutoff (for example 0.6) for a steadier pointer, or raise smoothing.beta (for example 0.01) for less lag on fast moves.
I can't reach the edges of the screen.
Shrink the active area in the settings by moving the control_region values closer together, for example x_min 0.25 and x_max 0.75.
Does it work in a dim room?
It needs to see your hand clearly, so normal room lighting works best. A bright window directly behind you makes tracking less reliable.
I'm left-handed.
Either hand works by default. To make it listen only to your left hand, set "preferred_hand": "Left" and "max_hands": 2 under tracking.
Settings and privacy
Where are the settings?
In config.json: Start menu › GestureWright › Settings on Windows, or ~/Library/Application Support/GestureWright/config.json on a Mac. After saving, restart it. Windows: Start menu › GestureWright › Stop GestureWright, then open GestureWright. Mac: run /Applications/GestureWright.app/Contents/MacOS/gesturewright stop in Terminal, then open the app.
Can I change what a gesture does?
Yes. Under bindings, set swipes, three fingers or thumbs up/down to any shortcut, such as "hotkey:cmd+tab", or to media keys such as "media_play_pause".
Does it record or upload my video?
No. Each frame is processed in memory and then discarded. Nothing is saved or sent over the internet, and the app works fully offline. The source code is public, so this can be checked.
Does it drain the battery?
It runs at 30 frames per second only while your hand is in view, and drops to 8 after 8 seconds without one. Pausing stops the tracking work.
Removing it
How do I uninstall it?
Windows: Start menu › GestureWright › Uninstall GestureWright. Mac: run /Applications/GestureWright.app/Contents/MacOS/gesturewright uninstall in Terminal, then drag the app to the Bin.
How do I stop it starting at sign-in?
Windows: run %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\GestureWright\bin\gesturewright.exe disable-autostart from the Run box (Windows key + R). Mac: run /Applications/GestureWright.app/Contents/MacOS/gesturewright disable-autostart in Terminal. Opening GestureWright again turns it back on.
